CopyStory is a free Mac app for macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon. It is currently in internal TestFlight; a public App Store download is not available yet. These instructions cover CopyStory 1.0.
- Open CopyStory and finish the welcome steps.
- Allow macOS clipboard access when prompted so CopyStory can remember supported text and images you copy.
- Copy a new piece of text or an image. CopyStory begins with new clipboard changes; it does not import your earlier clipboard history.
- Open History from the CopyStory menu-bar icon or your enabled shortcut.
Open CopyStory with ⌥V
With the app running, press Option–V (⌥V) to open or close History. The menu-bar icon works too. In Preferences → General → Open history, you can enable the global shortcut or choose another combination.
Older installed builds may still use the previous shortcut until updated. A shortcut you explicitly saved stays selected. If ⌥V does not work, check the combination shown in Preferences and whether another app is using it.
Copy and paste
Select an item in History or a saved prompt in Library and choose Copy. Return to the destination app, place the cursor where you want the content, and press Command–V. Manual paste does not need Direct Paste permission.
Direct Paste is optional and off by default. You can enable it in Preferences. macOS must allow CopyStory to post events; inspect the exact CopyStory app in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility if access is unavailable. A visible enabled setting alone does not confirm that access is working.
Direct Paste requests a normal paste into the destination’s current focus. It does not restore or verify the original text field. If the destination changes, a protected field is active, or access is unavailable, use Copy and manual paste. Check the destination before pasting again; CopyStory cannot confirm that the other app inserted the content.
Save reusable prompts
Switch to Library to create and save text templates. Fill in any variables when you use a prompt, then choose Copy or the optional Paste action. CopyStory does not submit prompts to an AI service. Completed text can also appear in History while recording is active.
Control what stays
- Pause recording from the menu bar or Preferences before copying sensitive material. Resume when you are ready. Quitting also stops new capture.
- In Preferences → Privacy & permissions, add excluded apps and keep confidential clipboard-marker protection enabled. Unmarked sensitive content can still be recorded.
- Pin useful History items to protect them from automatic removal. Pins still count toward storage limits.
- In Preferences → History storage, adjust the item/storage limits or apply expiration after 1, 7, 30, or 90 days. Expiration is off by default and does not remove pins.
- Delete individual History items, clear unpinned items, or choose Clear all history… in Preferences. Delete saved Library prompts separately.
Clearing History does not clear Library, the current system clipboard, content pasted into another app, or backups. Read the Privacy Policy for storage and deletion details.
Something not working?
New copies are not appearing
Make sure CopyStory is running, onboarding is complete, and recording is not paused. Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Paste from Other Apps. Try copying a new, harmless line of text from an app that is not excluded. Confidential markers, unsupported content, oversized items, or a full store of pinned items can prevent capture.
History is full, or older items disappeared
The default limits are 1,000 items and 500 MB. The oldest unpinned items are removed first when a limit is reached. Applied expiration also removes old unpinned items. If pins fill the store, delete or unpin items you no longer need, or increase the limits. Deleted items cannot be recovered through CopyStory.
CopyStory reports a storage problem
Check available disk space and the error message. Avoid deleting or replacing the storage folder while troubleshooting. Contact support with the message and your app/macOS versions; do not attach the database or saved images.
Launch at login is not working
Enable Launch at login in Preferences, then use Login settings to check macOS approval. If macOS is awaiting approval or the app has been disabled in Login Items, complete that step in System Settings.
I need to update or remove CopyStory
Update a TestFlight build through TestFlight; App Store releases will update through the App Store. Before uninstalling, clear History and delete Library entries if you want their saved content removed. Uninstalling alone may leave app data or backups behind.
Help us reproduce the problem
When you email support, include your CopyStory version/build, macOS version, what you tried, what you expected, and what happened. Use a harmless sample to reproduce the issue. Redact screenshots and logs before sharing; do not send private clipboard contents, passwords, API keys, or the History database.
